LED there be light!

With sustainability high on Horizon’s agenda, and as part of our Green Tourism UK accreditation, we are always looking for new ways to reduce our impact on the planet, and one thing we have been keen to change for a while has been the lighting across the venue.

Although we’ve had LED spotlights in each room since 2014, we knew the move to full LED’s would not only improve our sustainability credentials, but also the functionality and aesthetics of the venue, especially the broadcast studio where getting the lighting right is imperative to the success of the broadcast.

Another key factor for us was the wellbeing of our delegates. There is plenty of research on the impact lighting has on mood and productivity levels. Poor lighting can cause headaches, fatigue, eye strain, and a drop in efficiency, which are all things we want to avoid as a venue. With LED’s, not only can we control and optimise the rooms lighting to your preference, but the reduction in bulb replacements helps to reduce our carbon footprint. Unlike traditional lighting which emits incandescent heat, LED lighting emits electromagnetic energy which requires less power to produce the same level of brightness. So much so, that in just one quarter, we have seen a 25% reduction in energy which equates to over 5000 KwH. This exciting result makes a considerable difference, especially with the costs of our energy bills rising astronomically. This product could not have come at a better time.

With the recent increase in energy costs, had we not switched to LED lighting, as an independent venue we would have no choice but to pass the cost onto our clients, which is something we would always want to prevent.

We would love to hear how you and your organisations are making positive changes to reducing your footprints and if you have any ideas on how we can improve further let us know via sales@horizonleeds.co.uk.

Remember a small change is a huge step forward to a more sustainable world.
